This past January’s NAMM Show was, as ever, teeming with attention-getting new instruments and gear that served to reinforce the music products industry’s innovation and commitment to serving the needs of musicians. Amid the guitars and drum sets, synthesizers and effect pedals, and speakers and amps, one product that stood out to me—and that generated substantial excitement among attendees—was MXL Microphones’ DX-2 Dual-Capsule Variable Dynamic Instrument Microphone. It is, perhaps, unsurprising that MXL—a division of Marshall Electronics (Torrance CA)—was a NAMM Show headline-grabber; the brand, since debuting in 1998, has produced a range of high-quality microphones that are used in widely diverse applications. Putting the DX-2 in context, he said, “For over 20 years, MXL has created products that have helped to develop the modern recording landscape.” So, let’s explore how the brand’s new product fits into that rich heritage.
